If you want to become a fitness professional in New Brunswick or PEI, you need to complete your FNB fitness leader registration with the National Fitness Leadership Association of Canada (NFLA). You do this through taking exams and completing a registration process with their provincial affiliate called Fitness New Brunswick or FNB. This FNB fitness leader registration guide will cover everything you need to know to become a certified fitness instructor.

FNB is the provincial NFLA affiliate responsible for testing, setting educational requirements and managing fitness leader registrations in the province.

FNB Fitness Leader Registration Step 1: Study

The first step to earning your registration is to study for and pass the Exercise Theory exam. To help you prepare for this, FHP Education provides various training solutions, including a self-paced online Exercise Theory course. Unlike the special modules, Exercise Theory is a prerequisite to other certifications. This means that you won’t get a certificate once you’ve completed the course or pass the exam.

Step 2: Write The Exercise Theory Exam

To write the exam, you first have to register as member by filling out their membership application form. You’ll also need to pay a small annual membership fee.

  • If you register between April 1st – Dec 31st, the fee is $65
  • Between Jan 1st – Jan 31st, the fee is $25
  • February 1st – February 28/29, the fee is $15
  • And the fee is $10 for registrations that take place between March 1st – March 31st

Once you have registered with Fitness New Brunswick and completed your studies with us, you can register to challenge the Exercise Theory exam by writing to membershipservices[at]fitnessnb[dot]ca and paying a $115 exam fee (rewrites are only $60).

Step 3: First Aid Certifications

To complete your registration, you also need to show them that you have a:

  • Current CPR Level A or C certificate that is renewed annually for each specialty you choose (more info below), and
  • Personal Fitness Trainer CPR Level C (renewed annually), and
  • Standard First Aid certificate

You need to gather these certificates and submit them to FNB through your FNB Account.

Step 4: Complete Your Fitness Leader Registration

After passing the Exercise Theory exam and getting your First Aid/CPR certificates. You also need to register for and pass a specialty course of your choice. This process involves taking the course, completing an 8-hour practicum with an FNB mentor. Then, you’ll need to complete a practical evaluation within 6 months of course completion.

Common examples of popular specialties include:

  • Group Fitness
  • Resistance/Weight Training
  • Older Adult Fitness
  • Aquatic Fitness
  • Personal Training

Once you have completed these, you can log into your FNB Account and complete the registration.
