The National Fitness Leadership Association of Canada (NFLA) partnership of various non-profit organizations providing fitness accreditations for exercise professionals in Canada. Each province has its own NFLA affiliate offering certifications for Fitness/Exercise Theory, Personal Training, Group Fitness, Aquatic Exercise, Older Adult (OA) Fitness, and Resistance Training.
The great thing about certifications offered by NFLA and their regional partners is that it’s recognized nationally through NFLA and internationally through the International Confederation of Registers for Exercise Professionals (ICREP). How convenient is that!
Getting an NFLA Certification
You can pursue many certifications depending on what specialty you want to work in (i.e. personal training, older adults, group fitness). But, they all involve taking the appropriate education and passing exam(s) with your regional NFLA Affiliate.
For example, if you want to get your Fitness Theory certificate in BC, it is a 3 step process:
1) Study the Fitness Theory course
2) Register for the Fitness Theory exam and pass it
Although we focused on BC with this example, the steps are similar to other provinces. If you need help registering in other provinces, contact us for help.
Regional NFLA Certification Providers
As mentioned above, you’ll need to take the exam and register with your local affiliate. Here’s a list of regional NFLA affiliates for various provinces in Canada:
- BC: certifications are run by the BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA)
- Alberta: certifications are run by the Alberta Fitness Leadership Certification Association (AFLCA)
- Saskatchewan: it is the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA)
