Becoming a fitness instructor is a rewarding career. One aspect is seeing the client progressively grow stronger, gain stamina, and become healthier. The other element is meeting and interacting with many different clients daily! For those living in Saskatchewan and would like to become an SPRA Fitness Leader, or instructor, check out how you can do this below.
SPRA Fitness Leader
For those interested in becoming certified with SPRA, you can choose three different pathways. You can decide to become a group exercise instructor, aquatic exercise instructor, or exercise for the older adult instructor. But what do all of these have in common? You will need to complete the Exercise Theory course and pass the NFLA Exercise Theory Exam.
Exercise Theory Exam
You can choose to take the course in person or online. At FHP, we offer SK Exercise Theory online course that you can complete in your own time and schedule. There is no need to go out of your way to study and cement your schedule. Study when you can, wherever you are. As soon as you enroll with us, you will immediately have access to all of the course content, including notes, lectures, 600+ practice questions, and practice exams.
Group Exercise
This is a certification course, which has two parts, including fundamentals and specialty courses. Prospective students will be learning about topics including leadership, legal responsibility and accountability, music, and class components. In addition, fitness leaders will need to take one or more specialty courses for their certification. You can choose one of the four (or all four):
- Total body conditioning
- Steop & Choreography
- Group Cycle
- Fitness Yoga
Aquatic Exercise
Perhaps you have experience with working in the water. In that case, this certification may be suitable for you. Unlike land training, a pool environment offers many benefits for those who want to reduce the impact on their body. To obtain this certification, you will be learning the properties of water and the differences between land vs. water exercises. You will need to demonstrate your knowledge, including pool organization, principles of water, and use of equipment. Note that you will be spending at least 4 hours in the pool during this certification.
Exercise for Older Adults
This specialty module helps prepare you to work with older adults who wish to maintain their independence and active lifestyle. There are many considerations when working with a unique population like older adults, so it is essential to have the skills to design, implement, and lead safe exercise classes. This certification requires you to know information on exercise and ageing, chronic conditions, and class modifications.
