After completing BCRPA Fitness Theory Course and Exam, you might be wondering what comes next. Before you continue to take your specialty course, you need to make sure you have your CPR certification. Of course, you will also need your First Aid as well. Here is what you need to know about your certifications.

Why First Aid + CPR Certifications?

Having First Aid and CPR Certifications mean that as fitness trainers, you have the knowledge to prevent health emergencies. Many things can happen during a training session, so knowing what to look out for is essential. When you know how to deal with accidents and emergencies, this provides additional safety measures for you and your clients.

Obtaining Your Certifications

Once you have passed your Fitness Theory Exam, you have one year to obtain these certifications. You will also need to purchase your first-year registration as a Fitness Student during this timeframe.

However, if you already have your CPR and First Aid Certifications before taking the Fitness Theory, that is also ok.

There are many places where you can get your certifications. You can get it from the following organizations or businesses authorized by these organizations:

  • Canadian Ski Patrol
  • St. John’s Ambulance
  • Red Cross
  • Livesaving Society
  • Heart and Stroke Foundation

Another thing to keep in mind is that your certifications must have an in-person component. Some organizations offer in-person courses or a blend of in-person classes. Typically these courses will span over two days, 8 hours each day. If you find it challenging to find two days, the blend mode is ideal. You can complete one portion of the courses online, go in for one day, and take your exam.

Which Level Do I Need?

As a fitness leader, you will need a minimum of CPR Level A and either Standard First Aid or Emergency First Aid certification. When signing up for these courses, ensure that your course (s) contains both CPR and First Aid.

Once you have received your certifications, make sure that you log them into your account on The Registry. This will be under your CPR Certificate and First Aid Certificate tabs.
