Now it is more important than ever to pay attention to our health. As we grow older, our body requires even more attention to keep it functional. It is essential to maintain independence and remain active in our later years to spend them doing the things we love. If you have a passion for working with older adults, live in Saskatchewan, and want to give back to your community, find out how you can get started on this career path with SPRA e-learning.

Step 1: SPRA e-learning Exercise Theory

The first step to becoming an Exercise for Older Adults fitness professional is to pass the SPRA Exercise Theory exam. We have had many people ask why they have to take this exam.

The answer is that SPRA belongs to NFLA, an umbrella organization that sets the standard for fitness professionals across Canada. They ensure that everyone adheres to the standard for prospective fitness professionals to pass exams. A pass ensures that the person has minimum knowledge to teach clients.

Each person must take continuing education (CE) courses to maintain professionalism and expertise.

The next question is: Where can I take SPRA courses?

Now that we live a day in an age where everything is online, why not courses too? Most of us do not have enough time to spend 20 hours a week in a physical classroom. It just is not practical. That is why we have developed the Exercise Theory course. With 12 lectures, 600+ practice questions, and handy notes, you will need everything to pass your exam. You can learn anywhere, anytime at your own pace.

There are 10 topics that the exam will test you, ranging from anatomy to movement mechanics. Check out the exam outline here.

Make sure you study enough for the exam to avoid wasting your time and money. Once you have successfully passed, you will now take your certification course.

Step 2: SPRA Exercise for Older Adults

This course is practical, meaning you will have some hands-on components. It is 20 hours in total and contains everything you need to lead Older Adult exercise classes. Here, you will gain knowledge and skills to plan, design, implement classes. Some topics include how the body changes as it ages and how that influences exercises, chronic conditions, and modifications that we need to consider.

Courses offered can be found on the SPRA website.

If desired, fitness professionals who have gained designation for Exercise for Older Adults may take a Yoga certification course to gain additional certification.
